Questions

How are biometrics measured with smartphone / wearable sensors impacted by stressful daily experiences?

Approach

Participants who downloaded the MyBPLab app and owned compatible Samsung devices enrolled in this 3-week daily diary research study.

Within the app, participants were prompted to report their experiences of discrimination, their emotions, and used the validated photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor in their devices to record their heart rate, diastolic blood pressure, and systolic blood pressure.

We explored the relationship between these variables. Namely, whether experiences of discrimination were associated with greater cardiovascular activation.

Findings

I found that more experiences of discrimination predicted:

  1. Higher resting heart rate

  2. Higher resting diastolic blood pressure

However, more discrimination did not predict systolic blood pressure.

I also found that negative emotion (negative affect) mediated the impact of discrimination on biometrics.

Presentation

Below is a poster presentation that I did for this project at a conference. This poster was the winner of the Poster Spotlight that year, and as a result, I was invited to give a data blitz presentation!
